Goju Ryu Karate training places emphasis on breath control, core strength and endurance conditioning, close in fighting techniques, mental focus and mindfulness. The strategy of the Goju Ryu style’s fighting techniques utilizes circular movement coupled with hard powerful counter-attacks. Among the armoury of various strikes and kicks are also found grappling techniques which are an essential element of the style’s fighting method. Practitioners of Goju Ryu learn how to utilize tactics which close distance, imbalance and incapacitate an opponent to the degree required by counter actions needed.
✅ Goju Ryu practitioners always strive to live a life of peace without incident, yet when there is no alternative, the objective then is to end the conflict quickly and efficiently with respect to acceptable and reasonable use of force.
Martial Arts Characteristics of Goju-Ryu Karate
Goju Ryu karate is generally a stand-up style, characterized by both hard (closed fist) and soft (open hand or circular) techniques. Many Goju-ryu practitioners are martial arts technicians, in that they utilize angles to deflect strikes rather than trying to meet strength with strength. In addition, Goju Ryu tends to emphasize meeting opponents with the opposite of what they are utilizing. For example, striking the head (a hard part of the body) with the open hand (a soft part of the body) or striking the groin (soft) with a groin kick (hard).
Beyond this, Goju Ryu karate is known for teaching breathing techniques to a great extent. It also utilizes some takedowns and throws.
History of Goju Ryu Karate
Goju Ryu karate is one of the most traditional and most respected martial arts in the world today.
Its roots can be traced back to the political and social ties between Okinawa and China in the 1500’s. Ryu Ryu Ko, Kanryo Higaonna, and Chojun Miyagi were instrumental in the development and preservation of Goju.
Chōjun Miyagi April 25, 1888 – October 8, 1953 was an Okinawan martial artist who founded the Goju Ryu school of karate by blending Okinawan and Chinese influences. Miyagi Chojun dedicated his whole life to karate. He was responsible for structuring Naha-te (which he later named’ Goju Ryu’) into a systemized disciple which could be taught to society in general.
Chojun Miyagi lectured his students on history, culture, society, human relations, and not limited to physical training. During these sessions Miyagi Sensei would teach Kata (Form) in great detail and explain the bunkai (application) thoroughly. Chojun Miyagi dedicated his whole life to Karate. He was responsible for structuring Goju Ryu into a systematized discipline which could be taught to society in general. This teaching system formulated enabled Karatedo to be taught in schools for the benefit of the young and to reach vast number of people throughout the world.
