“We train to feel in control and to deal with a situation.” Michelle Betty

Most domestic violence involves a pattern of domination of one partner over the other. Self Defence lessons and training is a woman’s safe guard against further violence, especially when there has been an experience of a long history of violence and abuse from her partner. Although she may use violence in this instance, she is not the most powerful or most dangerous person in the relationship and may continue to fear for her safety.

Self Defence Brisbane provides assistance for victims of relationship violence within a Self Defence framework that is always supportive of the women who come and train.

Anyone can experience domestic and family violence. It happens across communities, ages, cultures and sexes.

Relationship violence has a massive impact on its victims and on society in general. More than one in three Australian women experience relationship violence in their lifetime, while about a quarter of children witness it. The impact is estimated to have a $13.6 billion annual cost. The financial, physical and mental costs for women and psychological, emotional and behavioural effects on children are incalculable.

Tips for surviving an attack:

  1. Prevention. Be part of your world. Notice the small things. Use your intuition. Be aware. Avoid danger. Simple things like maintaining your own personal space bubble can help avoid a possible attack.
  2. Do not allow yourself to be the victim. Making eye contact with people is a sure sign of confidence. Walk tall, shoulders back and stride or walk with a sense of purpose and assertiveness.
  3. Surprise your attacker: Do the unexpected. An attacker thrives on the fact that they have surprised you. When this element is lost they no longer hold the power.
  4. Visualise. A term you may have heard from top athletes or even in meditation classes. Well, the same applies for Self Defence. Visualise all forms of attack – in your home, in your car, at work, at a party. And watch your own reaction. We practise fire drills and flood drills from the time we go to school, but never have we practised personal safety drills. Have a plan and visualise it.
  5. You need to be physically fit. Adrenaline will get you so far, but physical fitness is required to survive an attack.
  6. We teach you how to strike effectively. This does not need 30 years of training, but this course/ lessons on Self Defence would go a long way to teaching you some fundamental basics.
  7. You are stronger than you think you are. When we teach you the correct and most powerful way to escape and strike, using your own body as a weapon, you realise how powerful you actually are. This one skill and the knowledge itself may save your life.
  8. Distance yourself from the attacker.

If you are worried about confidentiality, then don't be – our courses are totally secure, so no-one else needs to know that you are attending.
